Backbone Fire Update: Crews Continue to Monitor and Patrol the Blaze

As crews continue to battle the Backbone Fire in Prescott National Forest, officials are optimistic about the fire's progress. Near the fire origin, firefighters have been mopping up hot spots north to Government Canyon, designed to prevent the fire from spreading towards Flagstaff and other at-risk areas.

Smoke is expected to decrease significantly over the coming days as crews continue their efforts to extinguish the flames. In addition, aerial ignitions were used to provide depth along roads and the edge of Sycamore Canyon, which will help limit burn severity.

To date, firefighters have completed a firing operation from White Horse Lake Recreation Site to JD Dam and west towards Wagner Hill, using forest roads as a fire break. The chance of showers tomorrow brings some relief, with a relative humidity of 13-18%.

As of now, there are no structures damaged or destroyed, with resource advisors reporting that fire lines are in good condition. Crews will continue to monitor and patrol the fire perimeters, ready to respond quickly if afternoon thunderstorms bring lightning.

The Rock Butte Fires have transitioned to a Type 4 Team for management, with containment percentages ranging from 75% to 100%.
